Massimo Vignelli, 1976
Aesthetics
Their isnt much colour in this piece as it is made of old newspaper cut outs so its all grey and tanned brown. it creates the effect of nostalgia like bringing people back to the old times.
the fact its made of all these different countries old newspapers may symbolize the cultural background of the USA and contain a brief explanation of Americas history.
this is made with the intent to become a collage and is successful in my view.
this is definitely designed and is not random.
There is no sense of space on this work its all jammed in as this is a key feature of collages i tmay look messy but its actually very organised.
Context
This links into the history of America because it was made in 1976 making and contains all headlines of the times and times before so this would hold history in a political, social and cultural way.
This looks as if it was made for personal use.
you can tell when this was made due to the colours of the newspapers and the dates on the papers used.
Meaning
This work seems to have no narrative but the narrative could be included in the words in the titles of the paper extracts used to create the piece or it could just represent the cultural, political and social changes of America.
This work has no titles well not one that i know of.
This works theme seems to be the flag and newspaper collage.
This is a landscape collage piece.
Personal Response
My first response was positive as i thought the image looked really well made and thought about, as soon as i saw it i thought of a side by side comparison of the actual USA flag and this variation, i noticed the headlines at first as they were brought out due to the colour mixing of them and the background of the paper.
Although i like this image it did not evoke any feeling or any of my senses.
I have no emotional feelings towards this piece.
I like this piece i think this piece has a lot of value to some people and the artist due to the originality and obviously has some sort of meaning to the artist who created it.
