Letters made of toys by Joshua Scott
Aesthetics
Their is a lot of colour in this piece as it is made of a random selection of toys. it could bring back memories due to most people being brought up around toys.
This may symbolise the child inside the artist as he would like to go back to when all he would do is play with toys.
this is made with the intent to become a collage and is successful in my view.
this is both organised and random as it looks as if he has thrown a box of toys on the floor and arranged them into a shape of a letter.
There is no sense of space on this work its all jammed in as this is a key feature of collages it may look messy but its actually very organised.
Context
This doesn't really link in with any aspects of society in historical, social or political.
The artist doesn't really have a background to do with toys other than if he grew up with them, although he is very well noticed among the typographic designers due to his extensive work in the field.
this looks as if its for commission or exhibition due to the neat aesthetics of it all.
Meaning
This pieces title as far as i know is just "letters made with toys"
the theme is clearly the alphabet and toys due to the piece being the letter x made with toys.
This work seems to have no narrative as it is just letters made with toys, but these could be used to create quotes from kids films or books, or even toys.
i would associate this piece with portrait just because of the orientation of the piece.
Personal Response
My first response was positive as it made me remember my childhood because of all the toys, it made me feel happy and at home due to all the toys i can see that i know, other than this i had no feelings towards the piece other than the fact that i liked the layout and idea of the whole thing.
The only pieces ive seen similar to this are of the same artists work as he does many pieces similar to this all made with different objects.
