Visit London The O2 - Oscar Wilson |
Oscar Wilson's illustrations often consist of calligrams (writing to create the shape of the image) and with this he also uses the colour of the object drawn to colour the text to make it looks close to the real thing but still containing the visible text. Most of the work process seems to have been done on a computer as the colour and borderlines are too shadeless to be done by hand (blocky colour).
These pieces seem to have been done on photoshop or possibly illustrator, i think he did this by tracing the outline or drawing an outline of the object he intended to create for each piece then adding the text into the gaps left by the outline to make a realistic yet cartoonish effect.
QinetiQ Paraship - Oscar Wilson |
Oscar Wilsons pieces displayed in this post were possibly made due to the fact Oscar Wilson has been working in london for 16 years and they are clearly made to advertise London and attract tourists / visitors to come and see London for all its good parts as all but one of these pieces were designed for the company 'Visit London'. the Images have no political or hidden meaning they are all designed to introduce more tourism to London the dates they were made have no significance.
These pieces are linked with the culture of London by displaying all of London's hotspots, where people from london like to go and what is so enjoyable about them, all of this is displayed in the text of the calligrams.
Visit London Gorilla - Oscar Wilson |
All of Oscar Wilson's pieces have titles but as most of them are business designs they have somewhat professional titles such as the 3 Visit London designs all have a main title of Visit London then a subtitle next to it of what is contained in the image, a common theme among Oscar Wilson's work is Typography more specifically Calligrams, ask have looked at all of his work on his website and notices at least 70% of his work are calligrams. the type of designs he does are mainly in landscape format with a centre image that shows all it needs to and nothing more. in the pictures i have chosen there are no people involved but i have seen a few on his website that include workers for the london underground illustrated to be creating a map (the underground map).
Visit London Music 2 - Oscar Wilson |
I personally like the designs done by Oscar Wilson as i like the idea of calligrams and the way he creates them is very unique and works extremely well as he has chosen both the image and the words very carefully, whilst his designs have no emotional response from me my first response to the visuals of his Music 2 Piece was great as i enjoy music and i see he has include my favourite music venues such as electric ballroom and roundhouse which really called out to me as something familiar. Whilst none of his work really call out to my senses it makes you work to read the writing in the images.
